Rainbow Cup - Lions vs Stormers on 15 May 2021
May 15, 2021 - The match was played at Ellis Park on Saturday 15 May 2021, and kick-off was at 13:30 SA Time.
The Stormers scored the first points in the match from a penalty after EW Viljoen was isolated after a breakaway run and conceded for holding on. Van Reenen kicked the penalty to make it 3-0 for the visitors. Shortly afterwards the Stormers went offside on their 10 metre line and Jordan Hendrikse kicked the three points for the Lions.
The Stormers then tried to run a ball from their own try-line, and Wandisile Simelane got a hand to the ball, it flew high into the air and he regathered it to score for the Lions. Hendrikse kicked the conversion, to make it 10-3 for the Lions.
The Stormers then hit back with a try when they had a bit of space on the right and Burger Odendaal missed a tackle in midfield and let in Dan du Plessis for the try. Van Reenen missed the conversion to make the score 10-8 for the Lions after 18 minutes.
The Lions then scored a great try, when Warner ran a ball from a line-out on the Lions 22 metre line, he kicked the ball and managed to regather it more or less on the halfway line and then in the tackle got the ball away to Jordan Hendrikse, who got a great offload away to MJ Pelser, who scored the try. Hendrikse converted to make it 17-8 after 22 minutes.
10 minutes later Bongi Mbonambi scored for the visitors from a maul close to the Lions line, and Van Reenen converted to make it 17-15.
