Super Rugby Unlocked - Lions vs Griquas on 30 October 2020



October 30, 2020 - The match was played at Ellis Park on Friday 30 October 2020, and kicked off at 19:00 SA Time.

Griquas were on the back foot early in the match, when they were reduced to 14 men, with one of their players yellow-carded when Morne van den Berg took a quick tap penalty and was tackled by a player that didn't retreat 10 metres. The Lions didn't capatalise on this immediatly, but eventually Courtnall Skosan scored the first try after a monster scrum by the Lions against the 7-man Griquas pack. Jantjies converted to make it 7-0 after 10 minutes.

The second try for the Lions came when Simelane held the ball long enough to put Dan Kriel into a gap close to the try-line. Jantjies added the converiosn to make it 14-0 after 15 minutes.

George Whitehead kicked a penalty for the visitors after 23 minutes to make it 14-3.

On 30 minutes Griquas was on the attack, but Jaco Visagie caught Whitehead in posession and the ball went loose in the tackle, Dan Kriel kicked it ahead, Simelane gathered and put Skosan away for another try. Jantjies converted to make it 21-3.

Right before the break Stean Pienaar scored in the right hand corner with Simelane making the final pass, so he had a hand in all four Lions tries from the first half. Janjies added the difficult conversion from the touchline to make the haltime score 28-3.

In the second half the Lions opened the scoring with a maul try by MJ Pelser, again converted by Jantjies.

Just three minutes later Griquas scored their first try, when Scrumhalf Zak Burger dummied the Lions defenders at the ruck and scored under the poles. Whitehead converted and the score was 35-10 after 46 minutes.

Jaco Visagie then scored another maul try for the Lions, converted by Jantjies, to make it 42-10 after 50 minutes.

HJ Luus then answered with a maul try from Griquas, converted by Whitehead, to make it 42-15 after 54 minutes.

On 62 minutes Jantjies tried a cross-field kick to his Wing, but Griquas Fullback James Verity-Amm read the play and gathered the kick and ran in the 50 metre try, converted by Whitehead to make it 42-24.

On 70 minutes Simelane scored one of his own, it came from a kick from Whitehead, the Lions gathered the kick and from the ruck on the halfway line, the ball went left to Simelane, he chipped the ball over the defenders and gathered the ball to score. Jantjies converted to make it 49-24.

Tinus de Beer scored the 4th Griquas try, it came from a ruck close to the Lions line, he was tackled but managed to roll over ans score. Whitehead added the conversion to make it 49-31.

The Lions had the final say in the match with two tries by Nothnagel and Skosan, with Jantjies converted the one from Nothnagel to make the final score 61-31.
