Super Rugby Unlocked - Stormers vs Lions on 17 October 2020

October 17, 2020 - The match was played in Cape Town on Saturday 17 October 2020, and kicked off at 19:00 SA Time.

The Lions started the match well and managed to hold their own in the set pieces, which prevented the Stormers from using it as a platform to gain momentum in the match like they did when the two teams met in a friendly a few weeks back.

The Lions went 3-0 up after 6 minutes when Elton Jantjies kicked a penalty from the 10 metre line.

Straight from the kickoff the Lions went off their feet at the ruck, and Damian Willemse levelled the score at 3-3 with an easy penalty kick from the 22 metre line.

The Lions then scored one of those tries so characteristic of them in the three years that they reached the Super Rugby finals, the ball went left down the backline from a ruck just outside their 22, Dan Kriel was tackled on the 22 and from the ruck Scrumhalf Morne van den Berg passed to Jantjies, who passed to Maxwane, who was tackled by Herschel Jantjies, but he got the pass out to Jaco Kriel, who was unmarked next to the touch line. He made it all the way to just before the halfway line before passing back to Jantjies, who then drew the last defender and put Maxwane away for a brilliant try. Jantjies converted to make it 10-3.

Damian Willemse kicked another penalty just before the break to make the halftime score 10-6 for the Lions.

In the second half the Stormers scored first with a penalty from Willemse, and then just two minutes later with the Lions on the attack, Centre Rikus Pretorius intercepted a pass from Elton Jantjies and ran in a 65 metre try. Willemse converted to make it 16-10 for the Stormers.

The Stormers scored their second try in the last quarter of the match when they sent the ball left from a ruck close to the Lions try-line, and Dan du Plessis went over for the try from close range, beating the tackle of Ulengo. Willemse added the conversion to make it 23-10 for the home team.

The Lions then had the last say in the match when they ran a ball from inside their 22, with the break coming from Burger Odendaal who dummied two defenders in the move and stepping Willemse on the Stormers 22, he made it all the way to close to the Stormers try-line where he passed to Elton Jantjies who scored under the poles. Jantjiess added the conversion, but then in the last 10 minutes there was no further points in the match and the home team won 23-17.
