Lions 27 (13) vs WP 13 (6)

Lions finally win a big one

WP tried hard but fail to get a point from the match

The Lions beat WP 27-13 at Ellis Park on Saturday, scoring three tries to one and keeping their hopes for the 2008 season alive. It was a close match, and one that could still have been a draw, but the Lions stole a ball after the hooter and secured the match with a great try by Doppies la Grange.

The Lions had a dream start when Schalk Brits took his time with a clearance kick from his 22, and it was charged down by Louis Ludik, the Lions got control of the ball, Alberts carried it up and when he was close to the try-line, passed to Franco van der Merwe who scored next to the posts. Rose converted to make it 7-0 after just two minutes.

Province hit back just four minutes later when Willem de Waal slotted a penalty from just outside the Lions 22, the score now 7-3.

Earl Rose put the Lions further ahead in the 10th minute with a penalty just outside the WP 22, the score now 10-3.

In the 12th minute the touch judge spotted Dewald Senekal throwing a punch and he received a yellow card. Province decided to go for touch but luckily the Lions managed to keep them from scoring from the line-out.

Just five minutes later there was a high tackle by the Lions just outside their 22, and this time Willem De Waal went for the points and got it over, 10-6 the score.

The next chance for points only came in the 35th minute when Province played the ball on the ground at a ruck and the Lions were awarded a penalty just outside the Province 22, Earl Rose calmly kicked it and the score now 13-6, also the score at the break.

Dewald Senekal was injured in the last seconds of the first half, and was replaced by Justin Wheeler in the 2nd half.

The Lions started the 2nd half like the first, scoring a try after just 3 minutes, it came from a scrum on the Province 22, Alberts picked up at the base and beat one tackle, passed to Killian close to the touchline, and he passed to Vermaak on his inside, who dived over unopposed. Rose kicked the difficult conversion, and the Lions now leading 20-6.

In the 26th minute Province hit back, they set up a ruck inside the Lions 22, a player made a break from the ruck infield to the ruck, and then passed to his right without looking, where he found Nick Koster in support, he caught the ball and dived over for the try. De Waal converted to make it 20-13 for the Lions with 13 minutes to play.

With 11 minutes on the clock Ethienne Reynecke replaced Lawrence Sephaka, as uncontested scrums were in operation at this stage.

With just 3 minutes left Heini Gordon was on for Killian.

Province were throwing everything at the Lions at this stage, and then, after the hooter, the Lions stole the ball at a ruck, Doppies la Grange came away with it and chipped over the defense, regathered and went to score behind the posts. Rose converted and that was the final score, 27-13.
