get second win in 2008 Currie Cup
Boland simply outclassed in this match
The Lions beat Boland 57-17 at Ellis Park
on Saturday, scoring eight tries to two in a match where they simply outclassed
the opposition. They scored 5 points from the match, taking them to 11 points on
the log and second on the log before the other matches of Saturday.
Pre-match news, Franco van der Merwe will not
start, instead Justin Wheeler gets his first start after his debut from the
bench last weekend, and Francois Uys will be on the bench.
There was an early scare for the Lions in the
first minute of the game, when Jano Vermaak kicked an up-and-under from the base
of a scrum, Louis Ludik followed the kick and challenged the catcher in the air,
and came down heavily and looked like he might have injured himself, but luckily
after some water got up and took his place.
The match started a bit slow, with both teams
guilty of kicking too much ball away, and it was only in the 5th minute when the
Lions were awarded a penalty that there was a scoring chance, but Rose missed
the penalty to the right. It was from about the Boland 10 meter line.
About a minute later Boland got a penalty on the
halfway line, but this time Stefan Basson missed the penalty short.
In the 9th minute a bit of a shock for the Lions,
it was their ball from a scrum inside Boland's half, the ball came to Louis
Strydom who passed to his left, but Cecil Kemp intercepted the pass and Louis
only caught him behind the Lions 10 meter line, where Kemp offloaded to Dries
van Schalkwyk, who ran in the try under the posts. Cornelius converted to put
Boland in a 7-0 lead.
13th minute the Lions were awarded another penalty, on the Boland 22, and this
time Rose kicked it to make the score 7-3 for Boland.
In the 17th minute the Lions went
ahead, they had Boland pinned in their own 22 with a overlap to the right, and
the ball went down the backline, but Boland managed to tackle well and a ruck
formed close to their try-line, the ball came out on the Lions side and went
down the left to the backline, where Strydom couldn't fine Pretorius with a long
pass, but Rose picked up the ball and danced and weaved his way over the line
and scored under the posts. He also converted and the score now 10-7 for the
In the 27th minute
Boland got another penalty deep inside the Lions 22, after a late charge on a
kicker by Rose. Cornelius kicked it to level the scores at 10-10.
4 Minutes later the Lions were inside the Boland
22 again, and the ball going left down the backline to Strydom and then Doppies
la Grange, who was about 10 meters out but still sidestepped and powered his way
over for the try under the poles. Rose converted and the score now 17-10.
Just two minutes later the Lions managed a break
down the left wing, and Jano Vermaak followed up on the inside, where he
received the pass and ran in the try unopposed, again converted by Rose and the
score now 24-10 for the Lions, which was also the score at the break.
It didn't take the Lions long to open the scoring
in the 2nd half, Doppies made a good break in midfield, and when the ball came
down the backline to the left, there was a spilt pass that was picked up by
Alten Hulme, who spinned through the tackle and the ran in the try under the
poles again, again converted by Rose, and the score now 31-10 for the lions.
The Lions were now all over Boland, again a break
by Willie Wepener down the left wing, when he was stopped the ball went down the
backline down the right, with most Lions handling, and eventually Jaco Pretorius
scoring in the right corner. Rose converted the difficult kick, and the score
Willem Stoltz was
on for Senekal at this stage.
In the 11th minute of the second half Jaque Fourie
came on for Ludik, Pretorius moved to Right Wing and Boshoff to left, with Jaque
at Outside Centre. He had an immediate impact, handling two or three times that
lead to a try by Willem Alberts with a backline move to the left and Boland
running out of defenders. Rose converted and the score now 45-10.
20 minutes into the 2nd half Doppies tackled a
player in what looked to be a bit of a spear tackle, but he was injured himself
and left the field, replaced by Jaco van Schalkwyk.
Minnie on for Wepener, and Jonck for Vermaak.
8 minutes later a great try by the Lions, they had
the ball on the halfway line, Strydom chipped it over the defenders and Alberts
took in on the bounce, he gained a lot of ground but was ankle tapped, but he
got the ball away to the right and Jaco van Schalkwyk ran in the try in the
right corner, running round though and scoring under the poles. Rose converted
to make the score 52-10.
Janse van Rensburg replaced Sephaka with about 8 minutes to go.
Three minutes later Elgar Watts intercepted a pass
from Willem Alberts inside his own 10 meter line, and ran in the 65 meters to
score under the poles. He converted his own try and the score now 52-17.
Francois Uys replaced Jannie Boshoff on the Left Wing!
Jaco Pretorius scored his second in the right
corner with just a minute left in the match, and this time Rose missed the
difficult conversion on the hooter, and this was the match, easy 57-17 victory
for the Lions.
