Lions 33 (17) vs Chiefs 27 (13)

Lions break losing streak

Chiefs only get one point from match

The Lions surprised all with a great win over the Chiefs at Ellis park on Saturday, winning 33-27 after leading 17-13 at half time. Both teams scored three tries, two from the Chiefs coming in the last two minutes of the match.

The Lions kicked off and had the first chance in the game from an attacking scrum in the Chiefs 22 meter area, the ball went right down the backline and Earl Rose joined from Fullback, but the move broke down when Rose was tackled and he couldn't link with ludik.

3 Minutes later the Lions were awarded a penalty just inside the 10 meter line of the Chiefs, and Rose put the Lions in a 3-0 lead.

8 Minutes into the game, Willem Alberts picked up the ball from the back of a Lions scrum on their own 10 meter line, and found himself in space, he ran about 20 meters where he was tackled, but he managed to offload to Chris Jonck, who managed to outsprint the defense and score under the poles. Earl Rose converted to make it 10-0 for the lions.

14 Minutes into the game there was a mistake by the Lions, Walter Venter was in front of the ball at a kick by Jaco van Schalkwyk and Stephen Donald took the 3 easy points from the penalty just outside the Lions 22.

17 Minutes into the game Jaque Fourie had a strong run down the left touchline, it almost lead to a try but the Lions knocked on 5 meters from the Chiefs tryline. He also made a great tackle just outside his 22 meter area just afterwards, great to have Jaque back!

23 Minutes into the game some more exciting play from Chris Jonck, he picked up the ball from a Lions scrum on their 10 meter line, and broke round the blind side, with no defense close to him. When the cover got to him he kicked ahead, and the ball rolled into the Chiefs goal area, but luckily for the Chiefs Muliaina got there first to dot down.

Wilhelm Koch was on for Cobus Grobbelaar because of a blood injury for a few minutes.

29 Minutes into the game the Chiefs scored their first try of the match, they had a penalty close to the Lions line, but went for the line-out, and from the line-out they managed a forward drive over the try-line, with Hooker Aled de Mallanche getting the try. Stephen Donald converted to make the score 10-10.

33 Minutes into the game the Lions were penalised at a maul about 5 meters outside their 22 meter area, and Stephen Donald kicked the penalty to put the Chiefs in front for the 1st time in the match, 13-10 the score.

Franco van der Merwe came on for Senekal at this stage of the match.

The Lions hit back 5 minutes later with one of their best tries of the season, it started when Rose fielded an up-and-under just outside his 22 meter area, he kicked it high, and the Chiefs let the ball bounce on about the halfway line, Rose gathered the ball on the bounce and threw a long pass to the left to Big Joe close to the touchline, who found himself in space, he carried the ball into the Chiefs 22 meter area, where the ball came right again, the Lions now with a huge overlap on the right, the ball went through the hands and Alberts had the honour of diving over for the try. Rose converted to put the Lions back in the lead, 17-13 the score, and that was also the halftime score.

The Lions had the first chance in the second half, the ball came down the backline from a scrum just inside the Chiefs half, and Jaco van Schalkwyk broke the line, but his pass to Walter Venter was slightly forward, otherwise it was a Lions try. At the scrum the Chiefs conceded a penalty, this on the Chiefs 10 meter line, and Rose kicked it to put the Lions in a 20-13 lead.

13 minutes into the 2nd half the Lions scored their 3rd, a great break by Franco in midfield, he got to 5 meters from the line where a ruck formed after he was tackled, the ball came quick and to the right, to Joe who passed to Cobus Grobbelaar who dived over for the try. Rose converted the difficult kick, the Lions now in a 27-13 lead.

Ethienne Reynecke and Ross Geldenhuys replaced Willie Wepener and JC Janse van Rensburg at this stage.

23 Minutes into the 2nd half the Chiefs had a huge overlap on the right, and Masaga went over for the try in the right corner, but the try was dissalowed because of stamping by prop Ben May, who was shown a red card by the ref.

Jannie Boshoff wan now on for Jaque Fourie, and Dusty Noble was also on for Jaco van Schalkwyk. The Lions then had a great driving maul which was brought down by the Chiefs just short of their try-line, and Rose kicked the penalty to increase the Lions lead to 30-13.

30 Minutes into the 2nd half another great break by Dusty Noble down the right, he kicked ahead and regathered and passed inside, where Ross Geldenhuys carried the ball up, where he was tackled a ruck formed and again the Chiefs were penalised and again Rose kicked the penalty, the score now 33-13 for the Lions.

36 Minutes into the 2nd half Earl Rose interferred with a Chiefs free kick and got a yellow card.

Two minutes later Lelia Masaga scored a try from nothing for the Chiefs, Stephen Donald chipped a ball over the Lions backline and regathered, and passed to Masaga, who had a clear run in to the Lions try-line, Stephen Donald dropped the conversion. After the hooter the Chiefs scored another, this after a free kick close to the Lions line, Mils Muliaina ran over for the try, again converted by Donald. The final score was 33-27 for the Lions, a much needed and great win!
