Lions win big at home
Pumas unable to stop Lions try-fest
The Lions got their season back on track with a 74-15 win over the Pumas at
Ellis Park on Saturday, moving up to 6th place on the Currie Cup log but more
importantly, scoring eleven tries to two and looking like a team that has turned
the corner in the season after some poor performances earlier in the season.
The Pumas started well when they turned the ball over that was fielded by Jaco
van Schalkwyk from the kick-off, Fullback Arno Coetzee dropped over for the 3
The Lions hit right back when we found acres of space in
the Pumas 22 meter area, the pass went inside to Jano Vermaak who dotted down
under the posts untouched. Pretorius converted for the Lions to take a 7-3 lead.
minutes into the game the Lions scored another try, this time from a ball stoeln
at the breakdown by captain Wikus van Heerden close to the Puma try-line, the
ball went left down the line, Pretorius passed inside to Van Schalwyk who made
good ground, and then in the tackle he passed back to Pretorius on his outside
who dived over for the try. He converted his own try to make the score 14-3 for
The Lions had a great chance to score their third,
with Pretorius intercepting in his own 22 meter area, he ran it out but got
caught just inside the Puma half, where he passed to Reynecke in space, but the
hooker dropped the ball. The Lions got a penalty from the scrum, which was
converted into points by Pretorius.
Another scoring opportunity
went begging in another great move from Pretorius, he passed to Doppies on his
inside on his own ten meter line, Doppies beat some poor tackles and on the
Pumas 10 meter line he passed to Vermaak, running to the left and finding space,
but he had little support with him and decided to kick a grubber to the left
corner, it was chased by Ludik but the ball went dead for a Puma restart at
18 minutes into the game the Lions got their third,
Rose received the ball in space on the Pumas 10 meter line, with Daniels on his
right. He made sure that he put Daniels in space on the Pumas 22 meter line, and
Daniels bumped off the defender and powered over for the try in the right
corner. Pretorius missed the difficult conversion.
into the game the Lions got their bonus point try, great play from the whole
team, it started where Cobus Grobler stole a Puma line-out on the Lions 22, the
ball got to Pretorius deep inside his 22, and instead of kicking the ball, he
saw that he had an overlap to his left and threw a long pass to Earl Rose, who
ran the ball up all the way to the Pumas 22, where he passed to Jaco van
Schalkwyk on his left, he ran in the try under the poles, and it was converted
by Pretorius, the Lions now leading 29-3.
Another try should have
been scored 4 minutes later, Pretorius had a clean break from his own 22, and on
the Pumas 22 he had just the Fullback to beat and Daniels on his right, he
passed to Daniels but the pass was behind Daniels and the chance was lost.
van der Merwe got a great forward try in the 31st minute, powering over with his
pack driving him over the line. Pretorius converted to make it 36-3 for the
Bokkie Swanepoel scored the Pumas first try 36 minutes
into the game, this from a Puma line-out 5 meters from the Lions line after a
penalty was kicked into touch by the Pumas. The Pumas did the trick where the
ball goes straight back to the hooker, and he passed back again to Swanepoel,
who dived over for the try. Coetzee converted, the Lions lead 36-10.
Lions got another chance before halftime when they kicked a penalty for the
corner, from the line-out the ball got to Pretorius, who just kicked a grubber
and with no Puma defenders in sight, Jaco van Schalkwyk just fell on the ball
for his second try. Pretorius converted to make the score 43-10 for the Lions,
which was also the halftime score.
The Lions made four changes at
the break, Grobbelaar for Bernard, Muller for Smit, Jaco Pretorius for Jaco van
Schalkwyk and Kockott for Vermaak.
