The Varsity Cup's transformation targets for the next decade have been unveiled.

According to Rapport, there must be nine players of colour in each Varsity Cup or Varsity Shield match-day squad for the 2020 season, with five of those players required to be in the starting line-up.

During the 2019 season, the requirement was eight in the squad with five in the starting line-up.

The report in the Afrikaans newspaper added that the number will be increased each year and that teams will be required to start eight players of colour by 2025.

By 2028, the requirement will be 13 players of colour in the match-day squad, with nine in the starting line-up, and by 2030 the target will be 14 in the match-day squad, with 10 in the starting line-up.

Meanwhile, tournament organisers also announced last week that all but one of this year's fixtures will kick off at 19:00 in a new innovation they hope will improve attendance figures.

This adjustment will see one game broadcast on Monday nights, with the second-tier Varsity Shield moving to Friday evenings.

This adjustment will lead to fewer games broadcast on TV and the reason is believed to be due to dwindling viewership numbers.

The 2020 Varsity Cup kicks off on February 3, with the final scheduled for April 13.

Dan wonder hulle hoekom die TV kykers so min is.

Wat is die punt daarvan? Rerig? As jy goed genoeg is, is jy goed genoeg.

>>>and by 2030 the target will be 14 in the match-day squad, with 10 in the starting line-up.

So teen 2030 wil hulle net 5 wit gesigte in die beginspan sien.

I am all for equal opportunity,

There are many people out there with huge potential that could go under the radar if you dont give people the opportunity to prove themselves.

But surely we have moved passed having this debate of forcing players into teams. we have more than enough talent across all races in SA, we should be "pushing numbers" at this stage any more.

The top black players in SA are all there on merit. We should rather ask ourselves how do we increase the pool of players the varsity cup teams can pick from ? That lies in development of skills and better coaching at grass roots level.

The sad thing is that the best coaches and best facilities are reserved for the wealthy, but wealth and talent inst the same thing, but for a coach watching a trail game you need some special skills to spot potential amidst all of that.

An then offcourse there is the steroid problem , that isnt going away...

Die is politiekery en het niks met rugby uit te waai nie. As die politici nie af en toe geraas maak oor kwotas nie, het niemand eers geworry oor hoeveel van watter kleur speler daar in die span is nie.

I see the Varsity cup is getting less and less airtime.

Very little hype being created and now that the contracting from the unions have changed, it will die a slow death and become like the old USASA comp.

Its a little sad, Varsity cup was huge in producing a pipeline of talent.
