South Africa ‘A’ head coach Mzwandile Stick made five changes to his starting team to face the Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate Stadium on Thursday, which includes Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Marco van Staden earning starts
in a squad that feature 12 capped Springboks.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu joined the SA ‘A’ team in Bristol on Sunday after spending the last two weeks with the Boks in Dublin and Toulon, while Van Staden joined the SA ‘A’ team after being ruled out of Springbok coach Jacques
Nienaber’s original 35-man Castle Lager Outgoing Tour travelling squad due to a rib injury.
Feinberg-Mngomezulu replaces Johan Goosen at flyhalf in a new halfback pairing with Grant Williams, while the only other change among the backs is at fullback, where Gianni Lombard takes over from Aphelele Fassi, who
injured an ankle injury in the team’s 28-14 defeat against Munster last Thursday.
The changes in the forward pack were at hooker, where Andre-Hugo Venter is named in place of Joseph Dweba, who is on standby for the Springbok squad, with Van Staden replacing Phepsi Buthelezi at flank.
Stick opted for a split of six forwards and two backs on the bench, where JJ Kotze (hooker), Mornay Smith, Simphiwe Matanzima (both props), Dan du Preez (utility forward), Sikhumbuzo Notshe, and Buthelezi (both loose
forwards) will provide cover, with Sanele Nohamba and Goosen (utility backs).
“It was always our intention to give everyone in the squad game time on this tour to assess our player resources and see what the players have to offer at this level,” said Stick.
“This week we will hand a few different players starting berths as the demands are different on players from the starting team and the bench.
“This is a very talented group of players and they have had a little more time to gel in the last few days after having very little time together before the Munster game, and we are confident that this will show when
they take the field against Bristol.
“One of the changes was obviously injury-enforced with Aphelele ruled out, and this offered us an opportunity give Sacha some game time after watching from the sidelines in the last two Bok Test matches. He has really
impressed the Springbok coaching staff at training with his skills and enthusiasm and we saw what he produced for the Junior Springboks and DHL Stormers, so we are excited to see him playing flyhalf in this match.
“Joseph, meanwhile, is on standby for the Springboks depending on the injury status in their camp and this sees Andre-Hugo earn a start at hooker and JJ get a run off the bench.”
Stick expected another tough test against Bristol, although he said they would pose a different challenge to Munster.
“Bristol are coached by Pat Lam and with his New Zealand background, he enjoys skillful running rugby, so we are expecting the pace of this game to be faster,” said Stick.
“From our perspective, we also have exciting backs and mobile forwards, and they certainly have the ability to keep up with this and make their presence felt.”
Zoning in on their game Stick said: “We did several encouraging things on attack last week and our defence was solid at times, so the main aspects for us this week is to be a more cohesive unit on the field and to use
the chances we create on attack.
“The weather conditions resulted in several knock-ons at crucial times on attack last week, and that cost us dearly, so we need to be more accurate at converting those chances into points this week.”

SA A downed by Bristol Bears to end disappointing tourIt was a poor two games from a team that is supposed to be one step off the Springboks, as they went down to Munster and Bristol. The South African A team completed a pretty dismal end-of-year-tour with a disappointing 26-18 defeat against the Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate in Bristol on Thursday night. It was a poor two games in the end from a team that is supposed to be one step off the Springboks, as they went down to Munster in Ireland and then Bristol in England, with both club teams missing a host of players due to international commitments. In the match the SA A team got off to a decent start, as an early penalty for offside gave flyhalf Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu a shot at goal, which he duly converted for a 3-0 lead after three minutes. In the 15th minute a ridiculously long break in play then took place as the TMO decided to have a look at a possible high tackle by SA A lock Jason Jenkins, but due to not having sufficient angles it took almost 10 minutes for a decision to be made, with Jenkins finally sent to the bin. From the resulting penalty, Bristol went for poles and flyhalf Callum Sheedy easily popped it over from in front to draw the scores level. Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Sheedy then knocked over a penalty each, with the score locked at 6-all after 24 minutes. In the 32nd minute Bristol then scored the first try of the game, with some superb handling down the line ending with a top inside ball from fullback Luke Morahan putting wing Gabriel Ibitoye away to score, with Sheedy’s extras putting the hosts 13-6 up. The SA A team then had a late chance to get on the scoreboard with a scrum on the Bristol 5m, from which they earned a penalty, tapped and went, but then knocked the ball on to end half. Frantic startA frantic start to the second half from the SA A team then saw them under the pump early, however they calmed things down, went back to the basics and managed to score their first try. Finally getting territory in the Bristol half a big maul moved them deep into the Bristol 22m, with the ball then going through a few phases before a short ball to prop Ntuthuko Mchunu saw him through a gap and over to score. Feinberg-Mngomezulu missed the conversion leaving the score 13-11 after 49 minutes, which then became 16-11 just over two minutes later as Sheedy slotted a penalty after the Boks didn’t roll away at a ruck. In the 57th minute Bristol then scored their second as they powered into the SA A 22m, set up a number of pick and drives, which ended with prop Yann Thomas forcing his way over, and Sheedy converting to move up 23-11. Sheedy was enjoying an immaculate night with the boot and nailed his sixth successful kick of the night with another penalty in the 68th minute to put Bristol in an almost unassailable lead at 26-11. A massive scrum from the SA A pack in the 78th minute then saw a loose ball squirt out the back of the Bristol scrum, allowing replacement loose forward Sikhumbuzo Notshe to pick up and dot down over the line, with replacement back Johan Goosen adding the extras for the final points of the match. Scorers Bristol Bears: Tries – Gabriel Ibitoye, Yann Thomas; Conversions – Callum Sheedy (2); Penalties – Sheedy (4) South Africa A: Tries – Ntuthuko Mchunu, Sikhumbuzo Notshe; Conversion – Johan Goosen; Penalties – Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (2) |

Stick: “Individual errors cost us against Bristol”
South Africa ‘A’ completed their two-match tour on a disappointing note on Thursday night as they went down 26-18 against Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate, with head coach Mzwandile Stick saying
they can only blame themselves for the defeat.
Bristol held a 13-6 lead going into the break, and despite determined attempts to bounce back,
the SA ‘A’ side were forced to settle for the defeat, which means they will return to South Africa without a win following last week’s 28-14 reverse against Munster in Cork.
“We only have ourselves to blame,” said Stick.
“We started well, and we were in control, but then we allowed them back in the game. In the beginning our set pieces were good and we played a nice territorial game. But we ended up playing
too much rugby in our half and there were some poor errors from our side.”
Stick added: “There were times we got into their 22, but then we panicked, and tried to force things, and I’m not sure why that happened. Hopefully the youngsters will learn from the mistakes.
Despite this, they have bright careers ahead of them.”
Stick said the most disappointing aspect of the tour is that they selected a talented group of payers, which included a good mix of youth and experience, but they were unable to play according
to the standards they set for themselves.
SA ‘A’ captain Thomas du Toit was equally dejected: “The result was very disappointing for us because we take a lot of pride in the way we play. We made a lot of unforced errors and individual
mistakes, and that cost the team.
“That said, the match could certainly have turned out a differently if we had cut out some of the individual errors. Like any game there were positives and negatives we can take from it.”
Asked what he would do differently if they had another SA ‘A’ tour in future, Stick said: “If we have a similar tour to this again, perhaps we need to have a one-week camp to implement a few
things before we leave because we only had one or two training session before the first game and three before the second game.”
The team will return to South Africa, while Stick and a few players are expected to remain behind in the UK to join the Springboks ahead of their Test against England next weekend at Twickenham. |
