The Lions, who return to Super Rugby action this week after their bye, are set to be boosted by the availability again of Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx, who has had two weeks off.
Also, head coach Swys de Bruin and defence coach Joey Mongalo are expected to resume their on-field duties after a two-week period when their continued involvement with the Lions was uncertain.

De Bruin left the Lions on the eve of their tour match against the Chiefs in Hamilton due to stress-related matters, while Mongalo has been fighting for his job after being found guilty of indecent assault by a Sydney court. He has been sanctioned by the Lions and is appealing his conviction and sentence in Australia, but will continue to work on the team’s defence.

De Bruin meanwhile, having been treated and given professional help in Johannesburg in the last two weeks, will take over from team conditioning coach Ivan van Rooyen, who took charge of the side for the matches against the Chiefs and Crusaders.

Marx, last year’s SA Player of the Year, was forced to return home to rest before the Crusaders game - the Lions’ last match of their three-game tour - as stipulated by the Bok management team, but he is likely to be back in the No 2 jumper again this weekend when the Lions host the Waratahs at Ellis Park on Saturday. In his absence in Christchurch the Lions were led by loose forward Kwagga Smith because Warren Whiteley had also returned home with a knee cartilage injury so one of De Bruin’s first big calls to make this week is to appoint his team leader.

When Whiteley was injured in round two De Bruin opted to hand the captaincy to Marx, but most recently Smith did a good job leading the side. Whiteley won’t be in action again for at least two to three weeks, so one of Marx or Smith will lead the team for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, powerhouse loose forward Cyle Brink, who only recently returned to action following a lengthy injury layoff, will have to prove his fitness in the coming days after suffering a mild strain of his knee against the Crusaders, while further details are expected about the knee injury suffered by utility back Sylvian Mahuza, also in the match against the Crusaders. The Lions go into round 12 with a record of played 10 and won five, to be in fifth position on 22 points in the South African conference. Their remaining games are against the Waratahs (home), Highlanders (home), Sharks (away), Stormers (home), Hurricanes (home) and Bulls (away).

Here is my side for the weekend

1. Sithole

3. Sadie (We must buy this guy very quickly)
4. Vermaak (Not sure if he is fit? Otherwise Lewies/van der sluys)
5. Orie
6. Venter (We need some bulk , Schoeman can come on later, Venter will keep Hooper busy...)
7. Brink (I hope he will be fit, we need him in form and playing regularly)
8. Kwagga
9. Cronje
10. Jantjies 
11. Dyanti
12. Mapoe (Very few options, I would even consider converting combrink to a 12, he has the talent)
13. Similane
14. Skosan
15. Coetzee
16.Robbie Coetzee
17. Mcbeth (Does anyone know if Dylon Smith will make it back this season ?)
18. Johannes Jonker
19. Lewies/Van der sluys.
20. Schoeman
21. Groom (It pains me to write this okes name)

Coetzee and Cronje can cover 10, I dont rate Reynolds enough and its a shame we dont have a fit Lombard.

Coetzee and Cronje can cover 10, I dont rate Reynolds enough and its a shame we dont have a fit Lombard.
I think its high time they give Venter a proper chance.
Reynolds is a very good player, I would even like to see him at 12, he has played there before with Jantjies and they didn't look bad together, we cant judge him based on his performance against the Crusaders with Groom as his 9.
There really is no need to have Groom in the team at all... We have good young 9s that is aching for a chance...

I would like to see Bradley Thain get a few minutes of SR action soon. He is a livewire scrummie with a good pass, and is very different from Cronje and Smith, who play a very similar type of game. Although also very different to Faf, Thain also has the ability to speed up the game in the last 20, when the 'Tahs will be experiencing the effects of the altitude. That is something we must really do, make use of the 16th man, by playing a high tempo game, and then in last quarter up it even more.

I also like Thain (Could just be my UJ bias - Same with Venter...)

But Thain is a little small, not sure if he is ready to make the step up. Guys like Faf, papier, jantjies are all small 9's , but at least have a staunch build. 

Thain looks like he needs a bit of time to bulk up.Don't get me wrong,I am not size obsessed at all,  Aron smith is brilliant and not much bigger. But probably has an extra 10kg or so, which is just enough.

Defending the 9 channel , those line breaks at line out or even the 8 picking up from the scrum, if your 9 isn't ready it could be a weakness. 

I haven't seen him in a while, has he bulked up a bit?

Faf was also small when he started out. And we have seen that Faf tackles like a demon, and can even dominate much bigger men in the tackle.

Faf is a machine !! He just never was that small though, that's why I think Thain needs a couple of Kg's. 

I also havent seen Thain operate with great physicality in the varsity cup. 

Having said all this, I think he is a great prospect and could add value. He reads the game very well, has a nice crisp pass and distributes very quickly from the rucks.

My concern is more around the defense. We've seen how well Ross does on cover defense, and I just don't trust our first line of defense at this stage....

Faf always stood out, even playing behind a second rate pack (Pumas) against premier curry Cup sides. There are exceptions such as Simelane, but on evidence of this years Lions varsity cup sides , many of our current crop of young backs have played behind dominant packs at school and junior level and seem to struggle once they dont have a dominant forward platform to play from.

Hey Emiel,

Sorry but I don't agree. Both Tyrone and Gianni looked good as well (to me).

Tyrone looks like a powerful runner, but with a better step than Boeboes. And he is very strong in defense.

Gianni got the backs away much better than EJ did against the Chiefs, and it was only after EJ moved back to 10 that the Chiefs got back into the game. Don't get me wrong, I love EJ, but he has definitely slowed down a lot. Plus between Gianni and Shaun, Gianni is much more dynamic.

I would like to see Tyrone and Wandisele, along with Bradley Thain, get exposure in each game going forward. There's no value in hiding them, only to thrust them into the starting line-up next year. We must start giving our rising stars experience while we still have elders to teach them.

Have to say that I'm far more impressed with the young forwards coming through our junior ranks than the backs. Simelane and the injured centre Lourens van der Schyff were the only backs that that looked up to standard to replace one of the senior players in a high pressure game within a year or so. Have watched Green and Lombaard a few times in IRB U20 and a few half hour cameos in SR. I would seriously consider Lombaard at 15, but he still far from ready to control a game at fly half (our forwards won the game against the Chiefs, our backs hardly featured). Green certainly has promise on the wing, but none of our present seniors deserved to be dropped.
