Head coach Aaron Mauger has selected six Highlanders debutants in his squad to play the Sharks in their Super Rugby clash in Dunedin on Friday.

Kick-off is scheduled for 08:05 (SA time).

There will be first time appearances for flyhalf Mitch Hunt and wings Jona Nareki and Tima Fainga’anuku. Looking to debut off the bench is the versatile former Blues player, Michael Collins, who is joined by loose forward, Teariki Ben-Nicholas and lock cover Jesse Parete.

Having made his debut in 2016 and becoming a backline mainstay since, Rob Thompson will play his 50th game for the Highlanders. A strong running centre his experience and midfield combination with Josh Ioane should provide plenty of attacking firepower against the Sharks who started their season with a 23-15 win over the Bulls in Durban.

"The squad has worked very hard during the preseason and the players are excited by the opportunity to play in front of our home supporters at our stadium,” Mauger told the Highlanders’ official website.

The Highlanders, who had a bye in Round 1, will be captained by Otago loose forward James Lentjes.

The Sharks team to take on the Highlanders at Forsyth Barr Stadium in New Zealand’s southernmost Super Rugby city on Friday morning is almost exactly the same as last week’s victorious side barring one exception.

Try-scoring wing Sbu Nkosi has a minor niggle and will miss this game, handing newly-recruited Madosh Tambwe a debut start.

Two players are also set to achieve personal milestones in this game in captain Lukhanyo Am, who is set to play his 50th Super Rugby game for the Sharks (he already has 10 other Super Rugby caps for the Kings) and Craig Burden who will earn his 50th cap too, if he comes off the bench.

Head coach Sean Everitt admitted that the win over the Bulls was important for the team to set the tone for the season, particularly before touring.

"It was a massive confidence booster," he said of the 23-15 win at Kings Park on Friday evening.

"It was good reward for the players who worked tirelessly over the course of the pre-season. They’ve been amazing so it’s good that they put in a good performance, even if there were some errors, both teams made them in the tough conditions. So we’re happy with how things went and it was great to get onto the plane with a win."

Given the heat and humidity and the consequent difficult handling, playing in New Zealand represents the perfect opportunity at this time of year to play some exciting rugby without the risk posed in Durban during February.

"The guys are enjoying the conditions here," said Everitt.

"We play this match against the Highlanders under cover, so the conditions will suit us. I think the guys will find it refreshing although this first week is tough because we’ll have just one training session due to the travel. But we are happy with all the prep we did in pre-season, and the fact that the injury toll wasn’t serious outside of Sbu is a big plus."

Although Everitt admitted that the team’s win over the Bulls had not been error-free, constant improvement and above all consistent performances was what they will be working towards this season.

"We’ve said before that this team needs to be more consistent, we’ve been criticised for that, so consistency is key. Going overseas for four weeks is tough, we know that, but this team has a vibe about it and they are really keen to take up the challenge"

Strafskop Landers, 3-0 na 6 minute, was 'n strafskop afgestaan deur Du Toit by 'n skrum

Sjoe..

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 8:48am

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 8:49am
Sharks druk weer! Weer Mapimpi

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 8:50am

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 8:51am

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 8:51am
27-3 ook dan die rustyd telling

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 8:54am

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 9:15am
30-10 na 50 minute

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 9:30am

Posted By: PaBz0r
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 9:36am
Landers veg mooi terug, Sharks sal moet wakker slaap

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 9:42am
Sharks het weer gaan druk

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 9:44am

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 9:45am
Moeilik om 18 punte in 5 minute te maak so Sharks wen is redelik seker

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 9:51am

Posted By: Transvaal
Date Posted: 07-Feb-2020 at 9:53am
5 driee teen 3, so arme Sharks kry net 4 punte vir 'n baie goeie weg wen

Great performance by the Sharks.

They normally tour well and could be sitting in a strong position, if they tour well again. (Which they should , they have "easier" fixtures).

Almal redelik jonk en entoesiasties, min groot naam "has beens" of "hand me down rejects".
