The Emirates Lions got one over the Phakisa Pumas in a friendly match at Emirates Airline Park on Friday afternoon in rainy and windy conditions.

After a slow start when it almost looked like the teams will head up the tunnel without a single point, the Pumas managed to drive over after the hooter went.

Half-tiime score 5-0.

Jaco Visagie, Willem Alberts, Burger Odendaal and Wiehahn Herbst took the field at the start of the second half and immediately made a huge impression.

When Wiehahn Herbst entered the fray, he had an immediate impact and the Lions pushed through the Pumas to gain massive momentum. The attack started and Stean Pienaar used the chance to tap and go and forced himself over the goal line for the Lions’ first try of the day.

The second half was a different ball game and the new faces stepped up a gear to overpower the Pumas in all aspects. This lead to tries toe Pienaar (2), Reinhard Nothnagel, EW Viljoen and two to the quicksilver scrumhalf Morné van den Berg, the first within seconds of taking to the field.

Dillon Smit stepped in at flyhalf after Tiaan Swanepoel left the field. Swanepoel het a good day with the boot, missing only one conversion while his line-kicks were impressive.

The final score, as the rain came bucketing down over an empty Emirates Airline Park, was 33-5 to the home-team.
